COURSE OVERVIEW
In 2015, the government of Malta recognized youth work as a profession through the promulgation of the Youth Work Profession Act. The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Youth and Community Studies aims at providing professional training and development to prospective youth workers and youth policy makers. It also seeks to respond and meet the needs of organisations and individuals engaged in youth work. Course participants will thus have the opportunity to develop the necessary skills and knowledge in preparation for the empowerment of young people through reflective youth work practice. Moreover, candidates are encouraged to adopt an evidence-based outlook to youth work practice and youth policy development, and to consider research and evaluation as vital characteristics of their practice.

These aims will be achieved through providing to participants with the opportunity to engage with various academic perspectives of young people in the community at large, and to build a thorough understanding of the myriad domains that influence the lived experiences of young people. In addition, experiential-based study-units – especially the fieldwork placements – are designed in such a way to enable students to link theory with practice.

Students who successfully complete study-units to which not less than 60 ECTS credits are assigned, and opt not to proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the programme for the Degree, shall be entitled to the award of the Diploma in Youth and Community Studies.
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES After completion of the Course students will be able to:

• develop in course participants a working knowledge of theoretical and research perspectives of young people in the community.

• engage critically with presented material.

• develop research skills.

• develop various competencies that would enable a youth worker to communicate effectively with young people, as well as to developing activities and projects that achieve youth empowerment.
 
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY Youth work is one of the newest professions in Malta, with this degree programme being a pre-requisite for a career as a professionally-warranted youth worker. In Malta professional youth workers may be employed in a variety of settings including Aġenzija Żghażagh, schools, youth centres, youth empowerment centres, local councils, and non-government organisations.

Successful completion of the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Youth and Community Studies allows one to proceed to enrollment in postgraduate degree programmes such as the Master in Youth and Community Studies.
 
COURSE INTENDED FOR The course may be of interest to a wide variety of people:

• People who are interested in becoming professional youth workers, and who wish to embark on a career in one or more forms of professional youth work, such as school-based youth work, detached youth work, and centre-based youth work.

• Those who are currently working (voluntary or paid) in the youth sector and who wish to be more professional in their practice.

• Those involved in youth policy development.
 
ADMISSION AND
PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an English Proficiency Test to be held on 13 September 2017. Successful applicants will then be required to sit for an interview during the last two weeks of September 2017. These dates cannot be changed. Such applicants shall be exempted from sitting the proficiency test if they are in possession of SEC level English at grade 5 or better or equivalent. The closing date for receipt of applications from applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' (those who will be sitting for the proficiency test and/or interview) is 31 August 2017. The closing date for other applicants is 30 September 2017.

Applicants may also be required to submit a Learning Portfolio. Further information about the Portfolio will be forwarded to applicants.

Whilst filling in the online application for this course applicants must have their Police Certificate of Conduct in hand as they are required to include certain details from the Police Certificate of Conduct in the application form.

On acceptance on the course, applicants will be asked to submit an original Police Certificate of Conduct (not more than 6 months old) to the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2017.
