DEPARTMENT Counselling

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is aimed to be the main specialization for those choosing community counselling. Counselling happens in historical, philosophical and social contexts. This unit will help the student to critically inquire about the philosophy and values embraced by society in which the counsellor is working and the client is living. Awareness of the socio-cultural and ethnic background of the client will also be addressed. The unit will also tackle issues normally pertaining to community counselling including marriage and family issues, family breakdown, separation and children’s issues in such circumstances. Attention will also be given to difficulties experienced by clients living with issues of migration, substance abuse, disability and bereavement. Spirituality of the client and the counsellor will also be looked into.

The study-unit will present a variety of learning opportunities including lectures, group work, case study discussions, supervision, and supervised practicum (30% of 600 hours during third year and the remaining 30% during fourth year). Students will have the time to critically reflect and discuss situations that arise during the delivery of their practicum, in the environment pertaining to their specialization.

This study-unit has a strong focus on experiential learning supported by theory and recent research studies, with an emphasis on professional self-awareness, skills, and ability to conduct counselling with individuals who embark on change.
