DESCRIPTION This study-unit prepares students for the professional obligations they will be assuming as warranted counsellors on graduating from this course. It will critically examine various ethical approaches adopted by different professional associations from various parts of the world where counselling is practiced. It will also examine contextual and ethnic differences and how these may impinge on the ethical considerations and decisions that counsellors take in the course of their professional lives. Case studies will be presented and students will be supported to use and contrast different approaches to solving ethical dilemmas in the field of counselling.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To identify issues in professional ethics with regards to counselling;
- To examine ethical dilemmas in counselling practice;
- To depict how ethnic and contextual differences may impact professional ethics;
- To analyse how ethical dilemmas in the field of counselling may be addressed.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify and describe relevant theories and concepts related to professional ethics in counselling;
- Synthesise and identify differences in various contextual codes of ethics;
- Identify and describe ethical dilemmas across cultures.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate dilemma solving skills in counselling;
- Use the Counselling Profession Act and different codes of ethics appropriately;
- Use professional ethics skills during their placement practicum.
