DESCRIPTION Students shall present a written dissertation of not more than 40,000 words in length on a subject proposed by them and approved by the Board. The dissertation needs to be on a subject related to Family Studies. If deemed necessary, an ethics form shall be presented to the University Ethics committee for approval.

Students and supervisors are expected to hold regular meetings with their supervisor on a monthly basis. The work should have sound theoretical and methodological foundations. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are accepted. Triangulation of methods of collecting data are encouraged.

The dissertation needs to be presented well, in a number of coherent chapters that address the various aspects of the research process. A common structure of a dissertation is in the form of an introduction, a literature review chapter, a methodology chapter, a findings chapter, a discussion and a conclusion. The dissertation, including the references, should follow the APA format.

Dissertations should demonstrate students’ ability to engage critically with their work. Students need to appraise the literature critically and identify gaps in literature should these exist. They should also demonstrate a critical attitude towards their own work.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide students with a learning experience in undertaking empirical research.
To assist the student to obtain knowledge on the research process as it applies to Family Studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to know the right theoretical and methodological foundations to be able to undertake or assist in the undertaking of empirical research related to Family Studies.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Formulate a research question;
Carry out a literature review;
Choose the right methodological framework and data collecting tool to investigate a particular research question;
Evaluate the research findings and their implications.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
