DESCRIPTION The third core placement takes place in the third year of the course, spread over two semesters. Trainees shall have four- hour slots which will consist of a two hour-long family sessions. This practicum will take place in a variety of settings such as a school, a family therapy service in a social welfare agency, a residential home setting or a therapeutic service for couples and families such as the one run by a Non-governmental organisation (Cana) similiar to Relate (UK).

The practicum will give trainees the opportunity to do not only therapeutic work with couples, children and their families but will also invite trainees to think about the organizational issues present in the various settings that would have an impact on service delivery. They will also be formulating a systemic understanding of the organizational dynamics at play and reflection on a variety of interventions that may be considered helpful.

Trainees will also have the opportunity to benefit from the direct application of their learning in systemic thinking and practice to the family context by translating their experience of and thinking about families, to hypotheses and interventions. Trainees will also directly participate in the therapeutic conversations as part of the observing team.

In addition, the trainees will be expected to reflect further on their practice with the coordinating tutors of their practicum. They will be expected to link the relevant theoretical systemic concepts to their practice and situate their interventions in the appropriate systemic paradigm. Furthermore, importance will be given to evidence-based practice research and how this guides their work with families and organisations.

Trainees will be expected to demonstrate their learning through the writing of a portfolio and critical incident report.

Study-unit Aims:

- The overall purpose of the Practicum is to familiarise students with Family Therapy practice with clients and also to give the opportunity to students to put into practice their learning from year 1 and 2 of the programme of study;
- Trainees will have the opportunity to experience the context of systemic work within an agency;
- They will be familiarized with practical applications of various systemic techniques and models to different family-related issues such as behavioural problems, marital issues, past trauma such as abuse and loss, fostering and adoption issues, past drug and alcohol abuse issues;
- Trainees will also have the opportunity to work as a team of observers and participate in the therapeutic process of clients;
- Trainees will make links between theory, research and practice in a reflexive manner.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop a framework for understanding the major challenges faced by families and couples;
- Evaluate the current and potential role of the family therapist within the Agency;
- Put into practice various techniques from different systemic models;
- Develop a critical and evaluated approach to the application of systemic theory to their practice.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop and practice a broad range of techniques and competences from various family therapy approaches and systemic models;
- Acquire practical skills in ongoing therapeutic diagnosis and assessment of various family problems , interventions, reflective evaluation and reporting related to therapeutic interventions with families and couples;
- Show good teamwork skills when working with other professionals within the field;
- Be able to reflect systemically and intervene therapeutically with other agencies and professionals in other mental health settings involved in the therapeutic outcome of the families;
- Be able to link systemic theory and research with practice.
