DESCRIPTION Students shall present a written dissertation of not more than 20,000 words in length on a subject proposed by them and approved by the Board.

The completed dissertation proposal form signed by the supervisor shall be submitted for approval by not later than the 1st of June of the third year.

If deemed necessary, an ethics form shall be presented to the Faculty Research Ethics Committee to be approved by the University Research Ethics Committee

Students are expected to meet with their supervisors on a monthly basis. The work should have sound theoretical and methodological foundations. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are accepted.
Students will be required to defend their dissertation during an oral examination.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- Assist the students in learning how to undertake empirical research;
- Provide an understanding of the research process as it applies to family therapy.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge about the right theoretical and methodological foundations to be able to undertake empirical research.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Search the relevant literature on the subject under study and write up a focused critical review of such literature;
- Develop a research question or hypothesis;
- Propose a research design that would enable him or her to explore the research question or test the hypothesis;
- Analyse the strengths, weaknesses and limitations of the design;
- Choose a qualitative or quantitative research method that best helps him or her answer the research question;
- Take into account the relevant ethical considerations;
- Write the results and discuss them in the light of the available literature;
- Draw conclusions and recommendations.
