| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is intended as a taster to gender studies. It looks at the history of women’s studies, and briefly skims through the various feminist theories. It then tackles discrimination based on gender in our society, and goes on to look at three particular areas where this is found, namely violence against women, mental health and the politics of appearance. This unit will also offer students practical guidance and opportunities for developing and implementing effective public presentations. It will look at elements of communication, types and purposes of speeches, and factors to consider when planning and delivering speeches including audience analysis, organisation of the speech, supporting materials and audio-visual aids, physical setting, overcoming fear and attire. Study-unit Aims: - To increase students’ knowledge and self-awareness of discrimination and oppression on the grounds of gender. - To introduce students to public speaking and allow them to plan and deliver effective speeches. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - discuss and better understand general and specific discrimination and oppression on the grounds of gender that still exists within our society and reflect on the part we all play in this (self-awareness); - increase their awareness of gender discrimination around them; - outline features and processes which will facilitate an effective public presentation to suit different circumstances. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - implement goal setting and self-assessment with respect to public speaking; - plan and deliver an effective presentation in a public setting; - critically assess her/his public presentation.
