| DESCRIPTION | This course helps students become cognizant of the foundational topics of scientific inquiry so that they can become intelligent consumers of research as reported in journals, academic texts and in the media. Study-Unit Aims: At the end of the course the students will be able to : - Know the basic steps involved in carrying out research; - Understand issues of reliability, validity and sampling; - Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative methods. Learning Outcomes 1.Knowledge and Understanding: At the end of the course students will be able to - Demonstrate knowledge of the qualitative and quantitative research techniques; - Describe the steps in the research process; - Demonstrate knowledge of various research designs (experimental/non- experimental); - Demonstrate knowledge of research methods. 2. Skills At the end of the course students will be able to - Describe the differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods; - Know the basic steps in carrying out experimental and various non-experimental research methods; - Identify the best research design for a particular research question.
