| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is intended to help participants develop a cognitive perspective on human behaviour and to familiarise themselves with current theories, research methods and findings in cognitive psychology. Participants are expected to become familiar with major research methods in cognitive psychology, develop an understanding of the main concepts in the field, and show knowledge of the major classical and current findings in cognitive psychology. This study-unit will begin with a brief historical perspective on how the field of Cognitive Psychology emerged from earlier scientific endeavours and will discuss its particular approach and contribution to understanding the mind. The remaining lectures will tackle - necessarily quite briefly - a broad range of topics from mainstream Cognitive Psychology, focusing particularly on relevant experimental paradigms. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to help participants develop a cognitive perspective on human behaviour and to familiarise themselves with major classical theories, current theories, research methods and findings in cognitive psychology. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - describe major research methods in cognitive psychology; - demonstrate knowledge and understanding of major classical and current findings in the areas of: visual cognition; attention; memory; language; thinking and reasoning. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - consider research methods in cognitive psychology for use in investigating appropriate research questions (e.g., when planning their dissertations); - compare the cognitive approach to other approaches in psychology; - understand current research findings in cognitive psychology.
