DESCRIPTION | Aims - To make students aware that statistics are used to make sense out of data. Students are provided with simplified ways to think about statistical concepts and to see how these concepts translate into practical procedures for answering practical questions. - To deal directly and positively with students weaknesses in mathematics. Formulas and statements are presented with explanation and examples are worked out in a step-by-step manner. Also, to reduce the apparent complexity of statistics, similarities among different procedures are stressed and new terms and concepts are introduced in an integrated way, by tying to previous material (building a foundation and elaborating on it). Content - Statistics and the Research Process: The logic of scientific research, samples and populations and the characteristics of a study - Descriptive Statistics: frequency distributions and percentiles, measures of central tendency (mean, mode and median), measures of spread (range, interquartile range, standard deviation and range), z-scores and the normal curve. - Describing Relationships: Correlation coefficients (Pearson, Spearman and Point-Biserial), Using Regression to Predict Scores, Error when using the Linear Regression Equation to predict scores. Compulsory Text Heiman, G.W. (2004) Basic Statistics for the behavioral sciences (4th Ed.). Boston: Houghton- Mifflin. Suggested Reading Texts Rosnow, R. L. & Rosenthal, R. (2002) Beginning Behavioural Research (4th Ed.). NJ: Prentice-Hall. Kranzler, J. H. 2003) Statistics for the Terrified (3rd Ed.) NJ, Upper Saddle River: Prentice-Hall. |
