DESCRIPTION This unit aims to enable social workers, social policy administrators and mental health nurses to obtain the basic understanding, methods and skills they need to give best service to clients through the development and practice of community care, focusing on the Maltese environment, the practice of case management, the service of elderly and persons with disability, but with a special attention to the service of persons with mental health problems.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of this study-unit, the student will be able to:

• understand and appreciate trends and developments in community abroad and at home in the light of the needs, systems, policies and contexts that they respond to;

• appreciate the humane values behind good community care and ways in which these deeply underpin and guide practice;

• form a valid general opinion of how what can learned can be helpfully applied, adapted or avoided in Malta.

Skills:
By the end of this study-unit, the student will be able to:

• function better as practitioners, developers and organisers of community care;

• know how to adapt the service, its resources, its practice and models to particular needs and client groups.

It is expected that each students makes frequent back up study of the book marked A, and another marked B. Other books are recommended, according to interest.
