CODE SWP4518

TITLE Social Policy Second Practicum and Reflective Exercise

UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Social Policy and Social Work

DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers students first-hand experience of work in a setting where general and social policy services are administered. During their attachment to the agency, they will participate in tasks involved in managing, administering, planning, implementing or evaluating the service. The practicum will be designed in such a way to afford a good learning experience, a reasonable scope for initiative and skill, and particular independent projects (which may include an extensive exercise in evaluation and/or implementation). Arrangements will be made to set specific learning goals and give the students guidance during it. Each student will have a fieldwork supervisor at the agency, and a university tutor who pays guidance and assessment visits. Assessment will be made on the basis of the quality of the participation and the level of competence achieved, with the help of a written report about the experience by the student, which will form part of the reflective essay mentioned below. The duration of this practicum is 175 hours.

Student will be required to submit a Reflective Essay on personal learning relating theory, skills and values as related to practicum and other field experiences encountered during the whole course. This assignment of 4500-5000 words is intended to show how material from learnt theory and consulted literature has been progressively and personally assimilated by the student and how it has been used to throw light on particular experiences, issues and situations encountered by the student during the course’s practicum experiences, as well as increase the student’s competence in responding to them. These experiences include the course’s two practicum placements, and the placement involved in the social policy (evaluation) project as well as, if seen to be appropriate and with the right amount of emphasis, the student’s pre-placement. Good marks will be given for evidence of personal reflection and insightful observations on personal learning linked to personally encountered situations, for observed growth in relevant skills and value reflections, for the application of widely varying areas of theory, and for indications of ways in which submitted reflection can be extended to wider situations than the ones directly encountered.
