| DESCRIPTION | Debates about the sexuality of young people are considered sensitive and controversial, because of political, ethical and moral connotations. This unit acknowledges the complexities related to young people’s sexual activity. It focuses on factors surrounding young people’s sexual well being and health. It discusses the dynamics involved in sexual relationships and key issues, such as the meanings young people ascribe to sexuality, sexual pleasure, birth control, sexual orientation, and adolescent pregnancy. These topics are examined through competing discourses, which operate around the different understandings of sexuality. Social and psychological factors, which influence young people’s perceptions of sexuality and sexual behaviour are also discussed. The unit tackles sexuality education in relation to youth work practices. Study-unit Aims To introduce the understanding of sexuality as an integral and relevant aspect to professional education in youth work. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) comprehend the behaviour, belief and attitudes paradigm; (b) have a good working knowledge of the various theories of sexuality; (c) comprehend the social and psychological influences on sexuality; (d) have a sound background in the etiology of STIs and HIV. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) critically debate the salient themes at stake; (b) engage with the subject matter academically; (c) be able to apply the concepts to interventions and prevention with young people in the local context.
