James Madison University
12th May - 10th June 2005
The James Madison University Summer Programme has been coming to Malta
for seven years. Last year, the energy technology programme involved 3
projects:
The first project involved a case study for a hypothetical offshore
wind farm in the Marsaxlokk Bay area. The project analysed various technical,
environmental and social aspects generally associated with offshore wind
energy project development.
The second project involved a study on energy use in a local hotel.
This study focused on energy utilisation in the hotel's kitchen area. A
number of recommendations/measures were proposed to assist in reducing
the hotel's energy consumption.
The third project studied a number of installed domestic solar water
heating systems and evaluated their current performance. Customised reports
were produced for each household, highlighting the improvements that could
be made to enhance the performance of their system.
As from this year, besides the programme on energy technology, James
Madison University had a programme on health care. Two members of JMU,
namely Faculty Professor Judith Rocchiccioli and Associate Professor Cynthia
O'Donoghue coordinated a Summer School Programme in collaboration with
the Institute of Health Care, University of Malta. The programme included
a series of lectures, site visits to hospitals and health service departments
as well as assignment on two projects namely smoking cessation and Diabetes.
