DESCRIPTION | This study-unit serves as a bridge between the basic theory of meridians and clinical acupuncture. For acupuncturists, the acupuncture and moxibustion techniques are the weapons in the battle against diseases. These includethe filiform needles, moxibustion instruments, intradermal needles, electric acupuncture and cupping instruments. Each instrument has its advantages and characteristics. For example, intradermal needles are appropriate for treating chronic diseases, the electro-acupuncture has excellent analgesic effects, and the moxibustion can expel coldness and tonify deficiency. Study-unit Aims: Theoretical studies: This study-unit aims to assist students in mastering the basic concepts, characteristics, manipulations, effective mechanism, precautions and contraindications of filiform needling, moxibustion and cupping. Practical studies: This study-unit aims to assist students in mastering proficiently the manipulation skills of filiform needling, moxibustion and cupping, as well as gaining the ability to preventand solve common acupuncture accidents, and the ability to undergo a self-learning process and make use of problem solving techniques. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this study-unit the students will be able to: 1. identify basic concepts, operating characteristics and clinical applications of acupuncture and moxibustion techniques; 2. distinguish between treatment features of various methods and outline a number of relevant examples; 3. explain the effective mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion techniques; 4.establish and discuss in detail the origin and development of acupuncture and moxibustion as well as the representative needling techniques in Neijing, Nanjing and other ancient medical works; 5. make reasonable choices from amongst acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping based on patients’ diseases and skillfully operate them; 6. operate the three-edged needles, dermal needles, intradermal needles, electric acupuncture and acupoint injection; 7. prevent and handle common acupuncture accidents; 8. administer auricular acupuncture and scalp acupuncture to treat common diseases.
