DESCRIPTION Experimental Acupuncture and Moxibustion is a bridge between traditional acupuncture and moxibustion and modern science. It is an interdisciplinary sciencewhich studies the basic principles, rules and mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion by modern scientific techniques and methods. This study-unit will review recent advances in research in the field of acupuncture. The laboratory and clinical investigations searching for idea acupoints and optimal conditions provide an important resource for clinical acupuncturists to improve the efficacy of acupuncture.

This study-unit will mainly deal with:

• the relationship between experimental and traditional acupunctures and moxibustion;
• the history and development of experimental acupuncture;
• common techniques and methods applied in d experimental acupuncture;
• current research in acupuncture-point and meridians;
• acupuncture analgesia and acupuncture anesthesia;
• the clinical mechanisms of acupuncture and moxibustion.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this unit is to help students understand the characterization and rules of acupuncture and moxibustion, improve their clinical practical skills, and cultivate the scientific spirit and thought.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this study-unit the students will be able to:

1. understand acupuncture-point and meridians;
2. explain the mechanisms of action of acupuncture, such as acupuncture analgesia and acupuncture anesthesia amongst others;
3. design a clinical trial and an animal experiment on acupuncture;
4. be more familiar with recent advances in research in the field of acupuncture.
