Invited Professor for the Academic Evening in honour of St Thomas AquinasRev. Prof. Johannes Beutler SJProfessor Johannes Hermann Beu tler SJ was born on October 3, 1933 in Hamburg, Germany. He earned the degree of licentiate in Philosophy at Berchmanskolleg Pullach n. Munich in 1958, in Theology at Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main in 1964, in Biblical Sciences at Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome in 1967 and a doctorate in Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1972.
From 1971 to 1973 Professor Beutler was a Lecturer of New Testament Theology and Fundamental Theology at Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Sankt Georgen Frankfurt am Main, Germany. In 1973 he became Ordinary Professor at the same institute, being promoted to Rector from 1978 to 1982, again from 1992 to 1996, and Professor Emeritus in 2002. During 1998 to 2000 Professor Beutler was the Academic Vice Rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University. In 1999 he became Ordinary Professor of Exegesis of New Testament at the Pontifical Gregorian University, and in 2001 he obtained the same position at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. From there he retired in 2007 and returned to Germany. Professor Beutler has been a guest lecturer in various European countries, as well as Nigeria, Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, and Israel.
Professor Beutler has authored several books throughout his career. They include Martyria, 1972; Habt keine Angst, 1984; English version with supplement Do not be afraid. The First Farwell Discourse in John’s Gospel (Jn 14), 2011; Studien zu den johanneischen Schriften, 1998; Die Johannesbriefe, 2000 (Italian translation 2009); Judaism and the Jews in the Gospel of John, 2006 (Italian version in the same year). He was the Editor of Der neue Mensch in Christus in 2001, and co-editor of The Shepherd Discourse of John 10 and Its Context in 1991, Europa – Aufgabe für Christen in 1992, Heute von Gott reden in 1998, The Thessalonians Debate in 2000. He also wrote more than 130 articles in Biblica, New Testament Studies, other periodicals, dictionaries and Festschriften, book reviews in Biblica, Theologische Literaturzeitung, Theologie und Philosophie.
