Msgr Joseph Bajada, M.S.Th., J.C.D (Spec. In Iurisprudentia), Cap.S.S., was born in 1950, in Msida, Malta. He is a Senior Lecturer in Canon Law, in the Faculty of Theology and Faculty of Laws, University of Malta.

In 1977, he was ordained to the priesthood. That same year, he was awarded a Masters in Theology at the University of Malta. Between 1977 and 1982, he read for a Licentiate in Canon Law (J.C.L.) at the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome. Joseph Bajada defended his doctoral thesis in 1987 summa cum laude, following an intensive course for a Specialisation in Canonical Jurisprudence [J.C.D.(Spec. in Iurisprudentia)], at the same Gregorian University. The thesis was published by the Gregorian University, in the Series Analecta Gregoriana, n. 252, in 1988. In October 1981, he was appointed Defender of the Bond on the Metropolitan Tribunal of Malta, and a Judge on the First Instance Metropolitan Tribunal, in 1987. In November 2001, he was appointed by the Maltese Episcopal Conference as Judicial Vicar of the Regional Tribunal of Second Instance, with competence over cases originating in Malta, Gozo and Gibraltar. In 1990, Joseph Bajada founded the “Diploma Course of Studies in Canonical Marriage Cases, Jurisprudence and Procedure”, which is currently a two-year course of studies, intended to provide for the formation of personnel in ecclesiastical tribunals. The Course was approved and established by the Maltese Episcopal Conference. He is the Director and Main Lecturer since its inception. Furthermore, in 1990, he also founded and has edited ever since FORUM: A Review of Canon Law and Jurisprudence, published biannually, with subscribers in 33 countries. He is a member of the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
