Rev. Dr Jesmond Manicaro was born in 1964 and ordained priest in 1991. He studied at the University of Malta: in 1988 he graduated in Sacred Theology (S.Th.B.) and in 1991 he obtained a licentiate in Pastoral Theology (S.Th.L.) with the dissertation: Lay Participation in the Eucharistic Liturgy. He continued his studies at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome. There he read a licentiate (S.L.L.) and doctorate (S.L.D.) in Sacred Liturgy. His doctoral thesis was published in 2004: Liturgical Renewal in the Maltese Islands: A Historical Study (1840-1963).

His areas of interest include local liturgical history; church architecture; liturgical art; symbolism; liturgical formation, particularly of liturgical ministers; and liturgical translations.

He is also the Archbishop’s delegate for Sacred Liturgy and secretary to the Interdiocesan Liturgical Commission. He is responsible for the revision and publication of liturgical texts in Maltese. Recently he was trusted with the liturgical preparations for Pope Benedict XVI’s pastoral visit to Malta.
