TITLE The Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Fundamental and Dogmatic Theology, including Ecumenism

DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers the basic theological principles on the sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. The Eucharist is presented as the sacramental re-presentation of the Paschal Mystery of Jesus. The Scriptural basis of this sacrament is presented, followed by the main theological themes on the Eucharist: the real presence, memorial, transubstantiation. Eucharist orthopraxis is also studied, with special reference to the sacramental grace which is instrumental in the strengthening of the bonds of communion and Christian witness in the Church. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is presented within the context of the current understanding of the complexity of the act of reconciliation on the one hand, and the current theology of sin on the other. The Scriptural basis of both sin and reconciliation are presented, and the history of the sacrament is also briefly discussed. Finally the current theology of the sacrament is presented, based on the theology and practice of the Rite of the Sacrament of Penance.
