| DESCRIPTION | Pre-requisite: Preferably a working knowledge of history Objectives The main objective of the Modern and Contemporary Church is to continue understanding the major evolutionary events within the Church and its relation to human events. The transition from the modern to the contemporary periods effected the Church as well. The Council of Trent and its implementation is a watershed in Church History. This period includes the reform carried out by the papacy and reforming bishops, the rise of new religious orders, lay movements and the saints, cult and sacraments, popular devotions, popular missions, learning and the intellectual life. Evangelization during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Asia and North Central and Latin America gives insight into missionary development. The Church was hostage to the absolute confessional state, while towards the end of the eighteenth century she had to face the Enlightenment and the French Revolution and its consequences. During the nineteenth century, the Church faced the liberal state, and the industrial revolution; Catholic emancipation in England and the restoration of the hierarchy; Vatican Council I and the end of the Papal States. Finally during the twentieth century the Church lived through Two World Wars and a new world order, part of which is the process of a United Europe.
