MQF LEVEL 6

DEPARTMENT Moral Theology

DESCRIPTION General topics of social interest currently discussed in the public sphere (e.g. migration) will be studied from the ethical, political/legal and religious perspectives, each under the direction of a different member of the department of moral theology.

Each student will choose which of the three streams s/he wants to follow, and in consultation with the lecturer, will identify a particular theme within that stream, research it in depth, and write a paper of about 2500-3000 words to be presented to the whole group and opened for discussion.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to help students:

- identify the distinct moral, legal, political and religious aspects of discourse in the public sphere;
- grasp how these different aspects of the same issue or topic relate to one another and even presuppose each other;
- acquire skills to participate in public discourse through their individual research and group presentations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify the distinct moral, legal, political and religious aspects of public discourse, on a particular theme of general interest (e.g. migration);
- appreciate how each aspect of public discourse--moral, legal and political, as well as religious--is necessary as society discerns what is in its best interests and therefore for the common good.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- acquire in-depth research skills on current matters of social concern;
- practice team work and group discernment, as each student's contribution enriches the general understanding of the theme as a whole;
- oral presentation skills, as each student will not only write their paper, but present it to the group;
- argumentation skills as each student presents their work for peer scrutiny and debate.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Texts suggested are specific to the general theme that students work on in a particular academic year.

These would include: Church documents, legislation, position papers and documents commissioned by NGOs or other public bodies, publicly available statistics etc., in addition to academic books and articles.
