DESCRIPTION Pre-requisite:

Basic Studies in Theology or in a relevant area of studies

Objectives:

The objectives of this study unit are: a) to trace critically the various historical interpretations accorded to the sacrament of marriage over the centuries; b) to highlight the importance of the personalist approach in Vat II's theology of marriage and to discuss some contemporary challenges of married life; c) to present a holistic view of sexuality defined as a mode of communication; d) to evaluate different ethical methodologies employed to assess the morality of sexual activity; e) and to discuss the morality of pre-marital, extra-marital and marital sexuality.
The first part of the study unit will deal with the biblical view of marriage and the early Scholastics' and the major Medieval Theologians' opinions on the sacramentality of marriage; matrimony according to the Council of Trent; the influence of personalist teaching on Vatican Council II's perspective on marriage; the post-Vat II teaching on marriage, divorce and remarriage; and the spirituality of Christian married life.
The second part will focus on the theological-anthropological overview of human sexuality; deontological and personalist approaches to sexuality; conjugal and non-marital sexuality, deviant sexual behaviour, pornography, celibacy and chastity.
