| DESCRIPTION | Pre-requisite: Basic Studies in Theology , preferably Principles of Moral Theology Objectives: The objectives of this study unit are: a) to discuss the importance of dialogue between medical science, reason and faith; b) to evaluate the ambivalence inherent in today's development of healthcare facilities and biotechnology; and c) to assess critically the specific contribution of the church's moral insights in some of the leading thorny issues in healthcare and biotechnology. This unit will focus on the contribution of theology to bioethics, the meaning of health and disease, the value and significance of human life, the moral status of the human embryo, the sanctity-of-life vs quality-of-life debate, reproductive technologies, prenatal and pre-implantation diagnosis, abortion, sterilization, death and dying, dilemmas in neonatal intensive care unit, organ transplantation, genetic engineering, medical research, reproductive and therapeutic cloning.
