DESCRIPTION The study-unit will offer an outline on the foundational elements of Augustinian spiritual heritage as received and lived in the Augustinian Order through its history and as expressed by important Augustinian writers.

Elements of Augustinian charism and identity will be proposed as a meaningful manner to the building up of today’s society. Thus, by exploring critically the three principal roots from which Augustinian spirituality came to be, i.e. 1) Saint Augustine himself, 2) hermitical life, 3) mendicant tradition; students will grasp a deeper knowledge and experience of Augustinian values.

Study-unit Aims:

The main objective of the unit is to present a brief account of the history – from the beginnings to the present day –, the charism and the spirituality of the Augustinian Order. Those participating will be exposed to the main spiritual elements that were developed during the history of the Order of Saint Augustine. Moreover we will see how the Augustinian Order found ways and means by which to share this spiritual heritage with the laity.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a) acquire a deeper understanding of spirituality when reflecting on the Augustinian charism and spirituality through the ages, focusing on a more holistic vision, based on personal and communitarian aspects that are fundamental in Augustinian tradition as interpreted today at the service of the Church.
b) comprehend how the laity can participate, live and make its own the Augustinian Spirituality.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to identify how the Augustinian Spirituality is both in continuity as well as innovative with the spirituality of Saint Augustine.
