DESCRIPTION In each period of history, the Church has found ways of meeting the needs of troubled people. The Church ministry is that of bringing reconciliation, healing, guidance and growth. In our period of Church history this ministry is offered through Pastoral Counselling.

The Pastoral Counselling study-unit will draw on the one hand, on the deep roots in the tradition of the Church, and on the other hand, on the streams of new knowledge from the human sciences and psychotherapeutic disciplines. The study-unit will cover areas related to the nature of Pastoral Counselling; on becoming a Pastoral Counsellor; and on doing Pastoral Counselling.

The program includes topics like: Crisis Intervention and Situational Crisis; Counselling through the lifespan, from adolescence to old age; Anxiety, Stress and Depression; Loss and Bereavement; Marital & Family Therapy Skills in a Pastoral setting; Alcohol & Drug Dependence, and Suicide Management.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at:
- Studying in depth in a multidisciplinary approach some of the major problems encountered in the exercise of pastoral ministry;
- Providing a scientific investigation of the problems and offering solutions from a wider perspective;
- Integrating the various psychological approaches with the healing ministry and ethos of the Christian tradition.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Envisage the human person from the perspective of a Christian philosophical anthropology which sets the scenario for the appraisal of the human predicaments and the application of the appropriate solutions;
- Integrate these concepts and approaches with the insights acquired from the other disciplines particularly the helping professions.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Propose appropriate psychological and spiritual coping skills by way of fostering healing and helping the client sustain difficult situations;
- Demonstrate professionalism in the pastoral ministry and in the application of these skills in the various fields as they arise in the mission of the Church at grass root level.
