DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides a historical, literary and theological study of the origins of the New Testament. It will also presents adequate historical and religious context in which the books of the New Testament were formed. It will deal with the history of the canon of the New Testament and the main theological themes of the writings of the New Testament. Special attention will be given to the four canonical gospels.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim of the study-unit is to introduce students to the context in which the New Testament was written. Students will be aware of the different literary genres that were employed in the formation of the New Testament and will equip them to be more critical and analytical when approaching the different texts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- outline the main theological themes of the different New Testament writings;
- describe the political, theological and philosophical context of the different New Testaments texts;
- discuss the relationship differences between the different texts;
- understand and evaluate the main introductory books on the New Testament.
