DESCRIPTION The Book of Jeremiah is one of the most interesting and difficult pieces of literature of the Hebrew Bible. Jeremiah, the prophet and the priest, lived in the turbulent years spanning the seventh and sixth centuries B.C. during the reign of the last kings of Judah. His message was always loud and clear: he criticized the institutions of his day. Kings, priests and false prophets were all told that unless the nation followed Yahweh with all its heart it would fall prey to the military might of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon. Jeremiah insisted that social justice and faith in the living God must go hand in hand. His book is also full of interesting historical detail which is reflected in the archaeological record of the seventh/sixth centuries B.C. in Judah. This study unit provides one case-study in the area of Biblical Archaeology, and the results of literary criticism and archaeological research are put alongside each other thereby allowing us to grasp better both the book of Jeremiah and the rich archaeological record of Judah during the second part of the Iron Age.
