The Department of Art and Art History is involved in a range of teaching and research initiatives on the History of the Visual Arts in Malta, Europe, and North America. It offers two three-year undergraduate programmes of study leading to a B.A. (Hons) Degree in History of Art or in History of Art with Fine Arts, as well as study units leading to a general B.A. Degree. It also offers two different M.A. programmes; an M.A. in History of Art by research in which students work under the supervision of a designated tutor, and a taught M.A. in Fine Arts. Additionally, the department supports M.Phil.and Ph.D. research and helps service the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of study of other Faculties and Institutes.

The Department encourages staff and student exchanges with History of Art Departments in Europe and North America and has strong links with Universities, Fine Arts Museums and Art Academies in Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and the United States. Events involving visiting Art Historians are organised on a regular basis.

The Department has a number of research strengths among them the Middle Ages, Caravaggio Studies, Baroque, Neo-Classicism and Romanticism, Modern and Contemporary Art and Fine Arts. It is especially committed to the study of art in Malta in its Western European and Mediterranean contexts.
