The department endeavours to promote a deep understanding of Italy through the study of language, literature and culture. It focuses its teaching and research on the areas of literature, from the Medieval period to the contemporary scenario, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Cinema, Language and Culture. Academic members of the department have extensive contacts with their counterparts in Italy, Europe and America. Scholars are regularly invited to lecture and give seminars to students. The department has a long-standing tradition of student mobility, consolidated by the Erasmus exchange programmes that give students the opportunity to follow courses in various renowned universities. It liaises with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in the organization of cultural activities. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered to students reading for the B.A., B.A. (Hons), B.Ed. (Hons), B.A. Legal and Humanistic Studies, B. Communications, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The department also offers courses in Italian for Maltese and international students at beginners’ and intermediate levels, and for DegreePlus students.
