This course will train beginners to start to become proficient in French, which is the second most widely learned foreign language after English, and the ninth most widely spoken language in the world. An ability to understand and communicate in French is an advantage on the international job market and opens the doors of companies in France and other French-speaking parts of the world. It will train students in language skills up to Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• use the four language skills in French - speaking, listening, reading and writing - at a B1 level, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
• develop positive attitudes towards cultural diversity and intercultural communication.
• engage in a range of communicative scenarios through appropriate speech acts.
• understand a variety of written texts and oral conversations at a level-appropriate length.
• express themselves fluently and fairly accurately in writing.
• use a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures to express themselves.
• use a variety of strategies for autonomous learning.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY The Certificate in Language Proficiency aims to enable students to learn French not only for communication purposes, but also within the framework of a career pathway as a useful, additional professional qualification. This course will also have the added benefit of preparing students, should they so desire, for an international qualification in the shape of the DELF exams.
COURSE INTENDED FOR The Certificate in Language Proficiency in French is designed for students hailing from other Faculties and/or Departments wishing to learn a new language and be introduced to a new culture. It is addressed in particular to students learning French for communication.
Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

The Certificate Course may be taken concurrently with any University undergraduate or postgraduate course, whether followed on a full-time or a part-time basis.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2017.
