COURSE OVERVIEW
The Certificate/Diploma in Language Proficiency (German) is introduced to offer students from all faculties and to all academic or administrative staff at the University of Malta an intensive and professional training in German language skills. The course will complement their expertise in their area of studies with a considerable command of the German language both related to everyday life situations as well as to terminology in connection to their field of studies, such as engineering, the medical sector, to the field of humanities or to business/management.

The course is divided into two parts: the Certificate and the Diploma. Both parts can be followed concurently with the main degree course followed by a student of the University.

The Certificate programme is open to students and memebrs of staff of the University with NO KNOWLEDGE of German but who would like to acquire a substantial level of German language skills up to level B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Persons with some prior knowledge of German can be allowed to start the course at a level which matches their qualifications, and thus finish the Certificate in less time.

The Diploma Course in Language Proficiency (German) is the second part of the course. Persons who are qualified up to level B1 (CEFR) can be exempted from studies leading to the Cetificate and admitted to the Diploma course directly. The Diploma brings students up to C1.2 level of CEFR. At this level, Diploma graduates will have a very high knowledge of the language and can follow both spoken and written material with ease.

LEARNING OUTCOMES After completing the full course up to level C1.2 (CEFR), students will be able to follow more complex conversations in German in a professional environment and discuss issues related to their field of expertise by making use of specific professional terminology. Students will develop an in-depth command of the German language. They will be able to fluently communicate in German.

As with studying languages in general, the students' intellectual development is fostered through the in-depth study of a foreign language as well as the encounter with a different cultural context.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY Students will be trained for an international work environment, both in Malta and abroad.

COURSE INTENDED FOR This programme is specifically designed for students from different faculties at the University of Malta who are interested in complementing their main area of studies with a professional training in German language. Members of the academic and of the administrative staff of the University may also join these courses.
