Setting aside Chinese, there are more native speakers of Spanish in the world than there are of any other language and as an increasing number of people use IT to connect with others across the globe for work and pleasure Spanish is the language of choice after English.

This programme of study is intended to follow closely the curriculum of the Instituto Cervantes, the foremost institution worldwide in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language.
LEARNING OUTCOMES Subject-specific Knowledge:

- By the end of this course students should be able to understand accurate and idiomatically effective Spanish.
- They will also have gained some insight into contemporary Hispanic societies and cultures in Spain and the Americas.

Subject-specific Skills:

- The primary skills developed in this course are those relating to communicating in a foreign language, specifically understanding spoken and written Spanish and speaking and writing it.
- Coherent articulation of ideas and arguments, orally and in writing.
- An ability to combine organized independent study with effective group work.

Key Skills:

- Ability to function in a Spanish-speaking environment;
- Writing skills.
- Research and time management skills.
- IT skills (word processing of assignments, use of an online learning environment, use of online sources of information).
- Understanding of cultural difference and of different ways of representing it.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY This will also have the added benefit of preparing students, should they so desire, for an international qualification in the shape of the Instituto's DELE exams, over and above the University of Malta's own Certificate in Language Proficiency (Spanish).
COURSE INTENDED FOR This programme is aimed at non-language students and those students who although they may already be studying a foreign language desire to add another foreign language to their CV.
To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations.

The Certificate Course may be taken concurrently with any University undergraduate or postgraduate course, whether followed on a full-time or part-time basis.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in February 2017.
