| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will discuss and analyse the work produced by the most important painters working in Malta in the Late Baroque Period and will seek to acquaint students with their work. The introductory part of the course will discuss the international spirit of Late Baroque Art. The course will then delve deeply into the Maltese scene, seeking to place it within an international context, discussing the mechanics of patronage, its stylistic context and identifying its main protagonists. It will concentrate on the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries but will also extensively discuss the outstanding importance of Mattia Preti in Malta. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to discuss and engage with the production and stylistic character of Late Baroque Painting with special emphasis on painting in Malta within an International framework. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse and discuss art-historical, contextual and theoretical issues pertaining Baroque Painting in Malta. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Engage with connoisseurship and the analyses of the paintings and context of Baroque Painting in Malta, together with literature on the period; - Obtain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the work of the major artists of the period and the mechanics of patronage.
