| DESCRIPTION | Pragmatics provides the framework to study possible interpretations in the context of human communication. This study-unit will focus on the following: (1) an introduction of the different stages of verbal communication illustrating how verbal communication could be reflected in its written representation; (2) an investigation of communication in action with specific focus on the linguistic theories which reflect the different patterns dominant in pragmatics: deixis, speech act theory, conversational implicature, relevance theory and politeness are the main proponents of meaning in context. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to provide a blend of theoretical frameworks and practice in the interaction of meaning and context, thus presenting an introduction to discourse, applied linguistics and stylistics. Central themes in the study of meaning will be introduced, with lectures providing the terminological basis necessary for the understanding of crucial concepts. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - distinguish between utterance, sentence and proposition; - introduce the different stages of verbal communication; - show how verbal communication could be reflected in its written representation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - distinguish between different types of conversation; - decide on the appropriate framework of analysis; - apply theoretical frameworks to conversations; - critique the application of specific frameworks.
