TITLE The Modern Novel

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will focus on some of the canonical British novelists who were considered innovative in style and approach. The main authors to be discussed in the course of lectures and seminars are:

- James Joyce, ‘The Dead’ in Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a young man;
- D.H.Lawrence, The Rainbow;
- Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse.

The study-unit will discuss the following main themes:

- The Artist in the Modern Labyrinth;
- Epiphanic Writing - the search for a style;
- The interplay of naturalistic and symbolic scenes;
- The sublimation of the trivial;
- Aesthetic considerations concerning the novel;
- Fictionalized autobiography;
- The sense of an ending.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to define the development of the Modern Novel in the early twentieth-century England (1900-1940).
