TITLE Applied Linguistics in English Studies 1

DESCRIPTION The study-unit involves direct practice in language analysis and the application of linguistic frameworks to various contexts. It consolidates the knowledge and application of grammar rules in diverse situations. Furthermore, it introduces students to a tool-based approach to L1 and L2 contexts, and emphasises the distinction between theory and practice in applied linguistics. It will engage them in current research related to linguistics applied to other disciplines.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- provide opportunities for 'hands-on' experience in identifying and analysing linguistic problems in English usage;
- introduce students to the role linguistics plays in an interdisciplinary context;
- introduce students to the CEFR.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- distinguish between theory and practice in applied linguistics;
- demonstrate an ability to describe linguistic functions;
- learn about the various checklists adopted in language studies;
- demonstrate an ability to identify linguistic problems in English language usage as they occur in real-life texts (case studies drawn from corpora).

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- adopt close reading skills;
- link theoretical issues with substantive areas in language studies;
- use a range of analytical skills;
- engage in independent critical thought;
- design checklists and apparatuses to address problems in English Language usage.
