TITLE Synoptic Study-Unit 2: Readings, Interpretations, Applications

LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT English

DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with the opportunity for guided synoptic study, leading to a three-hour exam. Three main areas of English studies – literature, linguistics, cultural criticism – are represented through a close focus on three themes, namely, Irony, Discourse and Contemporary Mythologies. In this study-unit, the focus is practical applications and interpretation, unlike the companion study-unit ENG3052, where the emphasis falls on ideas, concepts and theorisation.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the expectations and demands of synoptic study;
- To provide students with guidance and opportunities for discussion of synoptic approaches to literature, linguistics and cultural criticism, with a special emphasis on critique and practical applications;
- To gently introduce students to the monographic teaching prevalent in postgraduate courses;
- To assess students, in formal examinations, on their ability to critique key ideas and concepts, and their pragmatic resonances, within English Studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Learn how to detect irony and its affinities within literary and other texts;
- Evaluate and compare different theoretical positions on the study of Irony;
- Critique and evaluate different theoretical positions on Discourse;
- Deploy established techniques in the evaluation of Discourse;
- Discern and critique the resonances of mythology generally in established and evolving culture;
- Approach contemporary mythologies as a means to learning more about the fields of cultural criticism and cultural studies.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Put to practical use all the theoretical outlooks and techniques covered in ENG3051 and ENG3052 on the analysis of discourse, irony and contemporary mythology;
- Write synoptically, critically and analytically on discourse, irony and contemporary mythology;
- Think and write synoptically about a range of themes, on the basis of what was imparted across ENG3051 and ENG3052.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

In view of the synoptic nature of this study-unit, main texts are not being indicated here, but comprehensive reading lists will be circulated at the start of each academic year.
