DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, students will have the opportunity to examine a number of approaches and methodologies widely considered appropriate and useful for the study of the English language across a broad range of contexts.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- sensitise students to the importance of choosing the appropriate methods for each research context in the field of English language and linguistics;
- give students practice in identifying the above for their own research;
- familiarise students with all the appropriate methods of research available for this context;
- fine tune skills developed in ENG5056, to focus more closely on research methods and approaches in English language and linguistics.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- explain the difference between quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, triangulation, and case study research, among other possibilities;
- thoroughly grasp the various approaches and methods (as above) most widely used currently in English language research;
- critically review key research in the field from the point of view of methodologies used.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- apply an appropriate method to a given research focus;
- choose the best approach and method in preparation for their own publications and/or dissertation;
- prepare an appropriate research proposal for the above within language and linguistics studies;
- evaluate their own choices in the above objectively and methodically in the light of established sources and best practice.
