DESCRIPTION This study-unit familiarizes students with the works of a number of female authors such as George Sand, Claire de Duras and Mme de Genlis. It addresses the problematic status of the "femme auteur" in the post-1789 Revolution context, which failed to provide the promised égalité in terms of gender. Prominence will be given to the early works of George Sand, in which the quest for female agency during the 1830 monarchy emerges most keenly. These works will be situated within the literary movements of the time, such as Romanticism and Realism. This module also deals with female authors' active engagement with issues such as race and politics.
