DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, some of the themes that shall be studied are the historical, political and cultural backgrounds that have witnessed the inception of francophone literature: the symbolism, the Francophone writer, the notion of hyper-conscience in linguistics, bilingualism, the French language around the globe, oral literature, polyphony. This study-unit involves also the study of texts by authors from different regions of the world, such as Zeyna Abirached, Tierno Monenembo, Jean-Joseph Rabaearivelo and Ying Chen.

Les circonstances historiques, politiques et culturelles ayant présidé à la naissance des littératures francophones, l’imaginaire de la langue, l’écrivain francophone, la notion de surconscience linguistique, le bilinguisme, le français dans le monde, la part de l’oralité, la polyphonie… ce sont là quelques-unes des thématiques qui seront abordées dans ce cours, dans lequel les étudiants se familiariseront également avec des littératures issues des différentes aires francophones via l’étude d’un corpus d’œuvres variées d’auteurs aussi différents que Zeyna Abirached, Tierno Monenembo, Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo ou encore Ying Chen.

Study-unit Aims

The aims of this study-unit are to familiarize students with some major Francophone works in order that they may be able to distinguish between the various characteristics of literatures pertaining to the main Francophone areas of the world.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to define the characteristics of works from different Francophone areas (Europe, Maghreb, Indian Ocean, North America, South East Asia, etc.) and analyze the specificities of a Francophone text.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to discuss the problématiques regarding Francophone and post colonial literatures and distinguish between the main linguistic situations Francophone authors find themselves in.
