DESCRIPTION The aim of this study-unit is to present the main movements and authors of the XVIIIe century and the major works written by Montesquieu, Diderot, Voltaire, Rousseau.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are: to present different ways on representing alterity and elsewhere in the 18th century; to present major schools of thinking; to present different literary, esthetic and cultural movements; to analyse major works.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to retrace the main evolutions of the french thought in the 18th century ; to define the main characteristics of the representation of the other and the elsewhere ; to characterize the main literary, esthetic and cultural movements.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to analyse canonical texts ; to analyse major works ; to replace a work in his context ; to write a commentary or a dissertation on representations of alterity and elsewhere in the 18th century, to compare and analyse major works.
