DEPARTMENT French

(Traductologie)

Following (At the same time students are introduced to) the (an) introduction to the problems raised by the translations from French into Maltese, where emphasis is mainly made on the practical and intuitive side of translations, students (they) will be able to translate from a theoretical point of view, thus making ample use of translation studies, whereby from a word to word translation, they put more emphasis on the pragmatic and discourse analysis side as well as on translation based on message interpretation, as recommended by M. Lederer and D. Seleskovitch in Interpréter pour traduire (Interpréter pour traduire). Furthermore, after being trained in the ‘version’ (translating from French to Maltese), the students are supposed to tackle problems encountered during the ʿthèmeʾ (translating from Maltese to French), thus giving the future translators a thorough training in translation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be:

- Able to translate from French into Maltese;(no semicolon but a comma after Maltese) (without the help of a bilingual dictionary, if possible);
- Trained (as well) in translation studies;( no semicolon) (traductologie) (whereby one has to compare the 2 languages in syntax, utterance, discourse analyses...and in doing so one understands what is happening if a difficulty arises while translating);
- Trained to the 'theme' (Maltese into French).

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will learn the different theories in translation (studies), making use of them way back to 1957 to date, and thus (He) translate(s) as accurate as possible from French into Maltese and Maltese into French. Besides that, the student will have skills in translation studies in both cases (version and thème); translate(s) as well as day to day texts, texts pertaining to literature or specialised ones such as in linguistic or those to be (no to be) found in the European Union institutes of translation.
