TITLE Sciences du langage: linguistique et communication

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 6

The aim of this synoptic study-unit is to test the students’ knowledge of linguistics in a holistic way. Thus, one avoids resorting to fragmented questions such as those used to test the study course on its own. The students are supposed to show in their answers, strategies which unite together their savoir and savoir-faire. The questions set for this exam mingle together the utterance aspect of French language (structural and generative grammars) with its pragmatic and discourse analysis, thus responding to a continuum pinned firmly from all sides.

An oral exam (allocated 10 marks out of 100, whereas the written component is allocated 90 marks), brings this exam paper to an end. During this oral exam, the examiners ask questions on both the written questions which were tackled as well as those which were not during the final exam. The aim of these questions is to elicit complementary information or to clarify some points that remain unclear in the written papers.

Learning Outcomes:

- The student will learn to consider linguistics as a continuum without splitting it into fragmented components;
- The student will acquire skills in French phonetics, in general linguistics, and in the different types of modern grammar which all shun the traditional approach in language analysis;
- The student will be able to answer questions which deal in a holistic way on the science of the French language;
The student will be able to view a language as scientific tool which enables him to solve any problem pertaining to one or more of its components.

In order to comply with the course regulations, the student is supposed to have followed all the study-units in the programme of studies without being obliged to get through all of them. The missing units can be obtained after having sat for the final exam.
