TITLE Philosophy of Perception

LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course



DESCRIPTION This study-unit first establishes the problems that define the philosophy of perception, (for example, hallucinations and illusions), identifying the source of these problems and discussing the solutions proposed by a number of theories such as the Sense-Datum Theory, The Adverbial theory, The Intentionalist Theory.

Study-unit Aims

The aims of the study-unit are (a) firstly to familiarise students with the actual problems generated within the field of the philosophy of perception questioning common-sense opinions on these issues; (b) secondly, to identify the key positions of the Sense-Datum, Adverbial and Intentionalist Theories of perception, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses; (c) to engage critically with each of these theories.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognise the various philosophical theses on perception;
- classify perceptual structures according to their communicative possibilities;
- explain the various forms of sensory experience.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify the various theories of perception and demonstrate their knowledge of them;
- rank the various theories in order to demonstrate their relative importance;
- choose in favour or against a specific theory and formulate a thesis concerning this theory.
