| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit explores the social aspects that influence the lives of people with intellectual disability. Prominent aspects of culture, religion, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation and their intersection with intellectual disability is evaluated in a Maltese and foreign context. The impact of inclusive societies on the individual with intellectual disability is investigated in order to determine the role of social acceptance and inclusivity, opportunity and equality. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at exploring the following themes: - Social perspectives of intellectual disability in relation to social class, race, gender, sexuality and identity. - Social construction and discourses of lives of persons with intellectual disability (cultural, religious, leisure, sexual, social policy). - Intellectual disability and the body. Interplay between the social and the natural. - Social interaction and reflexivity of people with intellectual disability. - An evaluation of social policies and legislative frameworks concerning intellectual disability. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify criteria that influence the social construction of disability - list and compare ideologies that impact on the social aspect of the lives of people with intellectual disability. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate how social concepts interact with disability. - evaluate the social contexts that impinge on the quality of life of people with intellectual disability. - apply their knowledge and understanding of the social phenomenon that affect people with intellectual disability holistically in a written format.
