The Satellite Communications Summer School is organised by the University of Malta in collaboration with Satellite Network of Experts (SatNEx).

Satellite Communications Systems are used for a broad range of applications including broadcasting, mobility, broadband access and governmental services. Others like Machine-to-Machine (M2M) or Internet–of-Things are emerging. A family open standards (such as DVB-S and ETSI) has provided a significant stimulus especially in the areas of broadcasting and broadband access. This together with the technology development of the space and ground segments has greatly contributed to the evolving panorama of Satellite Communications.

Today, Satellite Communications is mostly dependent on geostationary satellites but a number of systems are being proposed employing non-geostationary orbits. As users become increasingly technology agnostic, the interaction with terrestrial services is also receiving considerable attention.

The School is intended for people with a sound background in Communication Systems who want to have a broad overview on Satellite Communications.

The Satellite Communications Summer School 2017 addresses applications, methodological advances and basic theory of Satellite Communications. We plan to touch the current schemes that are implemented covering applications, the space and the ground segments, regulatory aspects, standardisation activities, as well as the current state-of-the-art and future tendencies. The School technical programme consists of 9 short courses as well as 3 keynotes from renowned international professors and industry experts. Most courses will include close-to-real implementation results.
