Meet Alice, a 12 year old year with confidence issues. Whilst playing with her mobile phone, she suddenly finds herself in a world of musical theatre. In fact all our wonderland characters seem to have an unusual resemblance to several familiar characters . Using a musical repertoire that includes songs from Wicked, Annie, Matilda, The Wizard of Oz, Finding Neverland and Annie get your Gun, sixteen Junior Company Members have put together a story that is sure to appeal to all musical theatre fans. This devised piece was made even more topical with the group choosing to integrate every day problems including bullying, commercialization and environmental issues.

FencesSenior Company

Fences: we build them up to bring us down…

This musical revue created by SOPA’s senior company brings together songs, dances and scenes to explore the subject of fences. Some fences are real- they exist to keep people in or out, to protect or to divide. But many fences are not physical- they exist in our minds and in ourselves. Racism, sexism, peer pressure, insecurity, lack of ambition, intimidation, fear and grief are all types of fences many of us will encounter at some time in our life.

With songs from musicals such as Everybody’s talking about Jamie, The Band’s Visit, Come from Away and Hamilton; original poetry and choreography and extracts from plays including East End Tales, Sparkleshark and Cloudbusting, this revue has been staged, choreographed and directed by the members of the company.

New Junior and Senior Company Auditions will be held on Tuesday January 14th 17.00-19.00 for interested applicants. Contact for more. information.

 Żfindays – Triple bill

“Żfindays is a celebration of dance… a showcase of ŻfinMalta’s versatility and excellence, and an important moment in our performance season that continues to foster creative relationships within our territory.” Paolo Mangiola, Artistic Director

ZfindaysDon’t miss this stunning triple bill by three award-winning choreographers. The evening begins with the national premiere of Silk, choreographed by Riccardo Buscarini. Silk is about travelling, communicating, and hovering in time, inspired by a winter’s journey on the TransSiberian railway. In 2018 Silk was nominated in the category Best Choreography, and Riccardo in the category Best Choreographer, for the Russian National Theatre Award ‘Golden Mask’, at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow.

Described as a dance-sport work, Tnax is an energetic and athletic choreography that has the ŻfinMalta dancers performing 24 different roles, as decisions on the choreography are taken in real time. Tnax is an exclusive re-creation from Jorge Crecis’ original work 36, created in 2011 for the company Edge and presented in 2012 at the Royal Opera House in London.

Closing the night is Prototype Hero, an original work created for ZfinMalta by renowned Italian-born dancer-choreographer Jacopo Godani, which invites its audience to enter another world and contemplate the illusion of endless transformations and appropriation of life. Godani, a long-time collaborator of William Forsythe, and now Artistic Director and Choreographer of the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, brings the highest calibre of work to the island through ŻfinMalta.

Il-Ħoss tal-Għabex - Nadine Axisa

Nadine Axisa Having achieved a following in the easy listening jazz niche, local artist Nadine Axisa has embarked on a new project, consisting of the production, recording and launch of her second album. The project involves the reworking of Maltese tunes from the 70s and 80s, where existing local compositions have been through a process of re-imagination. The tunes served as a vehicle for experimentation to create an interesting, cutting edge sound. Nadine has teamed up with local jazz musician/arranger Joe Debono and producer/sound engineer David Vella. A number of tunes have been chosen to form the basis for an artistic journey which involves experimentation from a melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and sonic perspective; providing the opportunity to create a fresh sound in the local jazz scene.

The album launch concert will be held on 30 November and 1 December 2019; 19:30hrs at Valletta Campus Theatre.

 Larinġa Mekkanika

ŻiguŻajg Festival

14 years + (Form 4 upwards)

LaringaMekkanikaAnthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange is a cult classic. But before it was a cult movie, it was a controversial book that told a story through the eyes of a troubled fifteen-year-old boy. This is in-your-face theatre for teens, laced with juvenile delinquency and youth gangs, in a near-dystopian future. It’s time for a fresh take on the classic novel.

The production contains strong language. Audiences will be required to stand during the performance.

Performance Dates: 21 - 24 November 2019

Here I go Again - The "Tour"

Here I go againThis is the fourth time that actor and comedian Kevin Naudi will be performing a one hour plus stand-up comedy show. This special “Island Tour” which takes a dig at much larger comedy acts that go on “road trips” across Europe, America and beyond, will take us from Santa Venera, to Msida and Valletta.

“Here I go again-no excuses” will feature brand NEW material as well as a couple of the classics which we just cannot get enough of. The first two shows “Laughing at he the Truth” (2015) and “Nothing to Hide” (2017) were a sell-out. While the most recent show entitled “No Limits” (2018) was a resounding success. Performed at the MCC it was the first ever solo act to perform at there, before an audience of over 750 people.

There are simply “no excuses” not to watch this hilarious comedian and his tales about false hopes and expectations about turning 40; his utter dislike of Norman Price and Peppa Pig; Women and their Price Charming; HR in the porn industry; Ruling the world, and many more sketches to have you in stitches.

Date: Saturday 02 November 2019

Come un granello di sabbia / Like a grain of sand  (In-box blu Award 2016)

Giuseppe Gulotta, storia di un innocente / story of an innocent

LocandinaWritten and directed by SALVATORE ARENA and MASSIMO BARILLA

In the framework Settimana delle Lingua Italiana organised by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura la Valletta in collaboration with Teatru Malta, Arts Council Malta, University of Malta - School of Performing Arts

At the age of 18, Giuseppe Gulotta, a young construction worker with a life like many others, is arrested and forced to confess the murder of two policemen in “Alkamar”, small barracks in the province of Trapani. The crime hides an unspeakable mystery: secret services and statesmen who deal with neo-fascist groups, arms trafficking and drugs. In order to cover up the silence, any scapegoat would do. Gulotta lived 22 years locked up in jail for a crime he did not commit and 36 years of legal hell. He never escaped. He struggled with dignity, remaining there come un granello di sabbia (like grain of sand) in an infernal spiral until the obstinately sought and obtained revision process (the tenth one of a long series) when he was definitively released.

Performance date: Saturday 26 October 2019

Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas

Poster Under Milk WoodOne of the funniest modern British comedies, Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas is also renowned for its stunning use of language, extraordinary townsfolk and universal themes that have made it an international favourite for decades.

Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Sheen have all starred in this hugely enjoyable play, described by Burton as “a comic masterpiece”. The talented cast in this stylish touring production staged by Moonlight Theatre with live music is drawn from South Wales, home to Dylan Thomas - one of the 20th century’s most popular poets and playwrights. The play's director, John Rhys Thomas, is a former chair of the Dylan Thomas Society and has already taken his version of Under Milk Wood on tour to New York, Harvard and Canada to great acclaim.

It’s set in a fictional small Welsh seaside town but it could be anywhere: the characters are eccentric, poignant, dreamers or driven, frustrated lovers, schemers, shopkeepers, fishermen, preacher, postman, blind sea captain, schoolteacher, ghosts, even a would-be if hapless murderer.

Surprisingly, the play has rarely been staged in Malta, despite its wide appeal and some striking similarities with Wales: both are small maritime nations with a proud independent culture and strong bilingual tradition.

Moonlight Theatre is excited to have the chance to showcase to new audiences and Dylan Thomas fans alike a play that never loses its comic appeal and offers a great evening out. And, at just two hours long, there will even be time for a relaxed post-theatre dinner too.
