Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas

Poster Under Milk WoodOne of the funniest modern British comedies, Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas is also renowned for its stunning use of language, extraordinary townsfolk and universal themes that have made it an international favourite for decades.

Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Sheen have all starred in this hugely enjoyable play, described by Burton as “a comic masterpiece”. The talented cast in this stylish touring production staged by Moonlight Theatre with live music is drawn from South Wales, home to Dylan Thomas - one of the 20th century’s most popular poets and playwrights. The play's director, John Rhys Thomas, is a former chair of the Dylan Thomas Society and has already taken his version of Under Milk Wood on tour to New York, Harvard and Canada to great acclaim.

It’s set in a fictional small Welsh seaside town but it could be anywhere: the characters are eccentric, poignant, dreamers or driven, frustrated lovers, schemers, shopkeepers, fishermen, preacher, postman, blind sea captain, schoolteacher, ghosts, even a would-be if hapless murderer.

Surprisingly, the play has rarely been staged in Malta, despite its wide appeal and some striking similarities with Wales: both are small maritime nations with a proud independent culture and strong bilingual tradition.

Moonlight Theatre is excited to have the chance to showcase to new audiences and Dylan Thomas fans alike a play that never loses its comic appeal and offers a great evening out. And, at just two hours long, there will even be time for a relaxed post-theatre dinner too.

Performance dates: Thursday 17 – Sunday 20 October 2019

Come un granello di sabbia / Like a grain of sand  (In-box blu Award 2016)

Giuseppe Gulotta, storia di un innocente / story of an innocent

LocandinaWritten and directed by SALVATORE ARENA and MASSIMO BARILLA

In the framework Settimana delle Lingua Italiana organised by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura la Valletta in collaboration with Teatru Malta, Arts Council Malta, University of Malta - School of Performing Arts

At the age of 18, Giuseppe Gulotta, a young construction worker with a life like many others, is arrested and forced to confess the murder of two policemen in “Alkamar”, small barracks in the province of Trapani. The crime hides an unspeakable mystery: secret services and statesmen who deal with neo-fascist groups, arms trafficking and drugs. In order to cover up the silence, any scapegoat would do. Gulotta lived 22 years locked up in jail for a crime he did not commit and 36 years of legal hell. He never escaped. He struggled with dignity, remaining there come un granello di sabbia (like grain of sand) in an infernal spiral until the obstinately sought and obtained revision process (the tenth one of a long series) when he was definitively released.

Performance date: Saturday 26 October 2019
