Chopsticks and Beijing Opera

Presented by the
Confucius Institute at the University of Malta

The Confucius Institute at the University of Malta introduced for the first time, the traditional practice of chopsticks and the art of Beijing opera, to a local primary and secondary school in Malta.

Children and teens were keenly interested in the subject and participated actively during the sessions.  The use of chopsticks and the correct handling was not considered a difficult task to accomplish, as students heartily completed the activity in a relatively short time.
During the Beijing Opera lesson, the Chinese teachers vividly presented the four roles of “sheng, dan, jing, chou” in cartoon figures, and even performed the famous “Su San Being Sent Under Escort”, which won a warm applause from the students.

The activity of “Bringing Chinese Culture to A Local School” has helped children and teens to appreciate and experience the quintessence of Chinese culture. They were amazed with chopsticks and were further attracted to Chinese Cuisine.  Students expressed their gratitude to the Chinese teachers, and conveyed their longing to learn more about the Chinese culture.
