“Open Week 2011”

Monday 14 to Saturday 19 March 2011

Confucius Institute at the University of Malta

On 14 March, the “Open Week 2011“ activity was lauched on campus by the University of Malta with the theme “Discover University”.  During that week, several Faculties, Institutes, Departments and Centres of the University of Malta participated in this activity and gave rise to a host of cultural sensations and planned activities, for both individuals and groups.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Malta themed its participation with ‘Traditional Chinese Customs and Culture’. It highlighed various aspects of Chinese culture through the illustration of Chinese calligraphy, the performance of a Chinese tea ceremony and the introduction of “Jian Zhi” or Chinese papercutting.

Whether the members present objective was Chinese language, culture or China, it certainly attracted a solid audience, as many stopped nearby to watch the performances.  They actively watched the performers present some highlights about China, prepare some tea soup or perform some papercutting designs.   Some attendees were keenly interested to participate and dared to mimic an art form or sought to learn more about the subject matter.

It was a distinct and vivid activity enjoyed by the performers and the members present.  The Confucius Institute at the University of Malta heartily achieved its goal of reaching local students and imparted Chinese knowledge.
